The Center for Stroke Rehabilitation

Recovering from a stroke can be one of the greatest challenges a person will ever face. However, research shows that early and specialized stroke rehabilitation can help to optimize an individual's physical and cognitive recovery and enhance quality of life.

At Kessler's Center for Stroke Rehabilitation, a team of neuro-rehabilitation specialists provides that early intervention with expertise and understanding to help individuals return home to family, work and community activities.

Our Approach

Studies indicate that where a stroke survivor goes for treatment can make all the difference in his or her recovery. Kessler, a specialized acute rehabilitation hospital, delivers a comprehensive program of medical, nursing and therapy care to successfully address the individual needs of each stroke patient. Our goal-directed approach to stroke rehabilitation tailors treatment to help patients:

  • restore physical function and enhance the skills needed to perform daily activities
  • build strength, improve balance and regain mobility
  • improve speech and swallowing
  • develop new cognitive and behavioral strategies to compensate for any deficits

  • Augmentative devices, like Lingraphica®, to improve communication and speech patterns

Specialized Services

As part of this dynamic stroke rehabilitation program, Kessler provides a wide range of specialized services including vocational counseling, orthotics services, assistive technologies, and advanced wheelchair, seating and mobility options. Kessler's renowned Driver Rehabilitation Program helps appropriate individuals develop the necessary skills to operate a vehicle and enjoy greater independence.

In addition, stroke support groups and educational programming gives patients and their families the opportunity to share information, discuss common concerns and learn from the experiences of others.

Continuum of Care

To help individuals successfully transition to life at home, at work and in the community, Kessler delivers an unparalleled continuum of inpatient through outpatient care. Patients who participate in our comprehensive outpatient stroke rehabilitation programs generally continue to reinforce the strengths and skills they have acquired.

Our Outcomes

Studies show that stroke survivors treated at an acute rehabilitation hospital like Kessler have a higher level of functional independence and are more likely to be discharged to home that those treated in other care settings. In fact, on average, Kessler’s stroke patients have greater improvement during their stay and a higher level of functional independence upon discharge, based on national benchmarks that measure criteria such as locomotion, cognitive ability and activities of daily living.
