Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation was founded in West Orange, NJ, more than 60 years ago. Today, this sprawling 152-bed campus is home to Kessler's internationally recognized Neurorehabilitation Centers of Excellence. These dedicated Model System centers for Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation and Brain Injury Rehabilitation, as well as those for Stroke Rehabilitation and Amputee Rehabilitation, provide comprehensive programs of care, and offer highly specialized programs, including:
- Severe Disorders of Consciousness, which provides care for individuals with catastrophic brain injuries.
- Dual-Diagnosis, which addresses the unique needs of individuals with both a traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.
- Ventilator Management, part of our 24-hour onsite respiratory therapy services, which helps to maximize breathing potential and decrease complications, successfully weaning many patients from mechanical ventilators and tracheostomies.
In a supportive and dynamic care environment, an interdisciplinary team of rehabilitation professionals introduce the most advanced treatment and state-of-the science technologies tailored to the needs and goals of each patient. This "high-touch, high tech" approach draws on the expertise of our staff and utilizes the latest equipment as appropriate, including:
- Body Weight Supported Treadmill Training (BWST) for early recovery of walking skills
- Upper and lower extremity electrical stimulation devices to improve muscle strength and motor control, such as the Bioness® H200 & L300, RTI300 lower extremity cycle, ERYGS and REGYS FES life-cycle ergometers
- Wii® gaming systems for virtual reality rehabilitation and functional training
- Computerized pressure mapping systems for both wheelchair and mattress prescription
- Electronic Aids to Daily Living, Environmental Control Units, and computer and phone access systems
- Power and manual wheelchairs, seating and positioning services, including computerized pressure mapping and custom components by ATP Certified therapy staff
In addition, Kessler's West Orange campus has an unusual full-time employee – a specially trained facility dog. Pete works closely with a Kessler occupational therapist, to reinforce skills during therapy sessions, enhance the overall rehabilitation experience, and begin to train individuals interested in obtaining their own companion dog.
Like Kessler's Saddle Brook and Chester hospitals, our West Orange campus also offers:
- Education classes, support groups, spiritual programs and leisure activities for patients and their families.
- Community integration programs including fitness classes, cooking classes, medication management, therapeutic recreation and Community Life Skills. Individuals may participate in trips to local shopping venues, museums, and sporting events, which allow our patients to practice the skills they've learned in a real-world setting as preparation for returning home.
- Pet therapy and other volunteer programs through which, for example, certified pet therapy dogs visit with patients to enhance socialization and contact and providing mental stimulation.
To reinforce gains made following discharge, Kessler offers a strong continuum of outpatient program, including a wide range of therapy services, physician follow-up, specialized services, such as our renowned Cognitive Rehabilitation Program, Driver Rehabilitation, Wheelchair Services, and Vocational Rehabilitation.
