Outcomes

Our goal - like that of our patients - is to optimize their physical and functional recovery. Through Kessler's comprehensive program of medical, nursing and therapy care, as well as extensive support and education, we help each patient to regain strength, recover skills and return to their daily activities with as much independence as possible.

Depending on the nature and extent of their conditions, our patients will have different rehabilitation goals and will progress at their or own speed. To help ensure that we are providing the highest level of quality care and treatment, we measure and report our patients' outcomes.

Outcomes are measured using several indicators, including the standard Functional Independence Measure (FIM), which reflects both overall and specific improvement in activities of daily living - such as bathing, dressing, self-care and mobility. Other quality measures we monitor include falls and infection rates, discharge destinations and our patients' satisfaction.

The satisfaction of our patients - and their likelihood to recommend Kessler Institute - are key indicators of how well we meet their rehabilitation needs and expectations.

In 2018, for example, more than 7,400 individuals chose Kessler for their inpatient rehabilitation. Despite the fact that our patients typically present with greater medical complexity than at other centers across the country, they experienced greater functional gains - and expressed greater satisfaction with their progress and our hospital's specialized programs.
