Allison Averill, M.D.

Dr. Averill specializes in stroke, brain injury and neurologic rehabilitation, including multiple sclerosis; spasticity management and medical acupuncture.

Dr. Allison Averill is the director of neurorehabilitation for Kessler Institute, specializing in stroke, brain injury and neurologic rehabilitation, including multiple sclerosis. Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as in medical acupuncture. Dr. Averill also focuses on spasticity management and medical acupuncture.

She is a consultant in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Hackensack University Medical Center, Valley Hospital and Select Specialty Hospital-Northeast New Jersey. She is also an assistant professor of in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Dr. Averill’s research interests focus on the behavioral management and cognitive rehabilitation of individuals with acquired brain injury, pain management and the use of complementary medicine in treating brain and spinal cord injuries. She is widely published and lectures extensively on traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis, as well as being actively involved in several professional organizations.

Consistently recognized among the nation’s top physicians by Castle Connolly and other independent organizations, Dr. Averill is the recipient of many honors, including the Henry H. Kessler, M.D., Award for Medical Excellence.

Dr. Averill earned her bachelor’s degree summa cum laude from Drew University and medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (formerly the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey). She completed a residency in rehabilitation medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and also studied acupuncture at the University of California at Los Angeles. She joined Kessler in 1992.
