Dr. Benevento specializes in spinal cord injury medicine and ventilator management
Dr. Barbara Benevento is the director of the ventilator programs, working with both spinal cord and brain injury patients. Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with additional subspecialty certification in spinal cord injury medicine, Dr. Benevento is also a certified acupuncturist.
An assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Dr. Benevento has been honored for her outstanding work as an educator and is also a recipient of the Henry H. Kessler, M.D. Award for Medical Excellence.
Her research, publications and presentations have focused on spinal cord injury and related issues, including neurogenic bladder and pressure wounds. She is a member of the American Spinal Cord Injury Association and American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Benevento earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Smith College in Massachusetts and medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University. She completed a residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital and Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She did a second residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (formerly the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/New Jersey Medical School), where she also completed a fellowship in spinal cord injury medicine. She joined Kessler in 1997.
